Romans 2:3 “But do you suppose this, O man, when you pass judgment on those who practice such things and do the same yourself, that you will escape the judgment of God?” Before we continue with Romans 2, let us remember to read this letter as a complete text as Paul originally wrote it to be to the church at Rome. As I stated in a previous post, chapters and verses were not added until I believe the first English translation, which was the Tyndale Bible. So with that in mind, Romans 2 we begin where chapter 1 left off about the things worthy of death that those will be judged for, and we’re warned not to judge others for these things if we do them ourselves.
It harkens back to Matthew 7 which people often take out of context to mean that one is not supposed to judge at all. In context it’s not that one is not supposed to judge, but one is not supposed to hypocritically judge. Matthew 7:3-5 states, “3 Why do you look at the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? 4 Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ and behold, the log is in your own eye? 5 You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.” As Paul states in 1 Corinthians 5:12-13, “For what have I to do with judging outsiders? Do you not judge those who are within the church? 13 But those who are outside, God judges. Remove the wicked man from among yourselves.”
The next passage of Romans 2 I’d like to point our attention to is Romans 2:5-11 which states, “But because of your stubbornness and unrepentant heart you are storing up wrath for yourself in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God, 6 who will render to each person according to his deeds: 7 to those who by perseverance in doing good seek for glory and honor and immortality, eternal life; 8 but to those who are selfishly ambitious and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, wrath and indignation. 9 There will be tribulation and distress for every soul of man who does evil, of the Jew first and also of the Greek, 10 but glory and honor and peace to everyone who does good, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. 11 For there is no partiality with God.”
It appears to be more evidence that once saved always saved is a man-made doctrine. As you can read within the text for yourself, God renders to each according to their deeds, and that eternal life is for those who persevere in doing good. Those who believe they can just be saved without having responsibility of maintaining their commitment to their faith and just choose to live unrighteous, Paul states God will give those people His wrath and indignation. It’s a very strong statement that can’t be ignored if we are to follow God’s Word accurately.
The rest of the chapter basically continues the theme we’ve discussed of all being judged equally by their deeds. Paul makes it clear to the Jews that they’re not in any better position than the Gentiles as it concerns their accountability to God. Paul states in Romans 2:25-27, “For indeed circumcision is of value if you practice the Law; but if you are a transgressor of the Law, your circumcision has become uncircumcision. 26 So if the uncircumcised man keeps the requirements of the Law, will not his uncircumcision be regarded as circumcision? 27 And he who is physically uncircumcised, if he keeps the Law, will he not judge you who though having the letter of the Law and circumcision are a transgressor of the Law?
